Thoughts From Coach Nye
“It’s A Great Day For Hockey”
One of most famous sayings in the world of hockey to me. Quoted by a great coach, Bob ’Badger’ Johnston famed for his run with the Pittsburg Penguins, Mario Lemieux Stanley Cup days along with coaching great Scotty Bowman.
Today marks off the day for all hockey fans across Canada and the United States to enjoy and watch the Canadain teams do battle head to head.
One week a head of the US fans who take part if their own Hockey Weekend Across America, the Fans of ‘The Great White North’ take in the ScotiaBank Hockey Day in Canada, hosting by one of the finest and oldest towns in Ontario, Peterborough, who again has one of the most historic OHL Junior teams in Canada’s hictory of hockey, that being the Peterborough Pete’s. This town will be jumping with festivities all day long and will be honoured to have the one and only Don Cherry and Hockey Night in Canada host, Ron MacLean who will be serving as the hosts through out the day.
One of the great events going on today besides the 7 Canadain teams playing, 6 of them against each other and Detroit will be hosting the Oilers, is the tournament called Under the Lock Hockey Tournament played on the Trent-Severn Canal in Peterborough. This tournament will be hosting 60 youth teams consisting of over 1,000 players, who will be competing and enjoying a day that they will never forget.
The NHL schedule begins at 2pm with games in Detroit vs Edmonton and the Jets of Winnipeg vs Ottawa Senators in the Countries Captial. At 7pm the Montreal Canadiens will host the Toronto Maple Leafs, a original six match up, and then finishing off the great day at 10pm, the Vancouver Canucks will be visiting the Calgary Flames.
Just not the NHL action will be taking place either as the Pete’s of the OHL will be hosting the Soo Greyhounds. This will be a outstanding game as it will feature the Greatest Hockey Player ever, Wayne Gretzky, who for a very brief time played for both junior teams, will be present and to top it all off the Pete’s and ‘Hounds will take part in the Pink in the Rink game that will raise funds to benefit the Canadain Cancer Society.
As I look outside today, the weather is brillant. Sunny skies and low winds will make this day to remember for all hockey fans for sure. And as Hockey Night in Canada is entering into their 60th year of being broadcasting on CBC it is only fitting that the Coach takes you down a little bit of memory lane.
Posted last week on CBC, host Ron MacLean showed a video that touched millions across our great countries and brought back memories to us all, who before we were able to watch the great game on TV we listened to the Saturday game on CBC radio with the great Foster Hewitt and his famous introduction, ” Hello Canada and Hockey Fans in the United States welcome to Hockey Night in Canada.”
So sit back and enjoy hockey fans, “Its A Great Day For Hockey!”
So until next time.
See you after the game.
